What is CBT?
CBT is a talking therapy based on the theory that our thoughts, feelings, physiological sensations and behaviour are all interlinked. When feeling worried, low or distressed, we can get stuck with certain types of thinking and behaving which ultimately complicates life.
CBT works to develop a better understanding of what maybe maintaining your difficulties. CBT can help you to notice and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviour patterns, so that you can feel better. Whilst we can’t change the past, CBT can help us to change our perception of our life experiences and to respond to them differently here and now.
CBT works
CBT is a talking therapy with a strong research evidence base. It has been proven to be effective in helping people overcome a wide range of problems. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT for treatment of anxiety and depression.
Working together
CBT is a collaborative therapy where the client (you) and the therapist (me) work together to develop a shared understanding on how difficulties may have developed, what maintains them in the present moment and how to change them in order to move from problems to identified therapy goals.
It is a structured goal-oriented therapy that aims to provide you with strategies (practical skills and psychological skills), to overcome your difficulty and to manage any future ones.
